Custom Medications and Compounding

Q. What are custom medications?
A. Preparation, mixing, assembling, packaging and labeling of a drug or device as the result of a practitioner, patient, pharmacist relationship in the course of professional practice.

Q. Why do I need compounding?
A.  Products that are not commercially available

Products that are not economically feasible to manufacture

Products or drugs that need to be altered with flavors or colors

Products that are tailored to meet the patient's individual needs

For a special drug strength or dose

Q. Can any pharmacy compound?
A. Preparation of specialized products that require chemicals and equipment that are not available in most pharmacies. Our pharmacists have extensive additional training in compounding techniques. Also, our support network generates a constant exchange of ideas, innovations and techniques involving compounding and includes Ph.D. chemists and pharmacists who research the feasibility of new formulations.  ScriptWorks Compounding Lab uses the purest chemicals available and does not compromise on quality.

service through customized medications."

The Triad Relationship
Compounding is achieved through an essential triad relationship—patient, physician and pharmacist. The physician first prescribes the medication, then, using the necessary ingredients, the pharmacist compounds and dispenses the medicine to the patient after a thorough consultation. This enables patients to receive the type of personalized care they deserve and allows ScriptWorks to provide superior, patient-oriented services.

Reasons for Compounding
There are several reasons why pharmacists compound prescription medications; yet, the most important one is patient noncompliance. Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. With a physician's prescription, ScriptWorks can change the strength of a medication or alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest. We can add flavor to it to make it more palatable. ScriptWorks' pharmacists can also prepare the medication using several unique delivery systems, such as a sublingual troche or lozenge, a lollipop, or a transdermal gel. For those patients who are having a difficult time swallowing a capsule, ScriptWorks can make a suspension instead.

Our scope of practice is almost endless. Our practice dedicates itself to focusing on our patients special needs. This may involve age appropriate pediatric medications, various dosage forms providing veterinarians flexibility in dosing for pets, alternatives in hormone replacement therapy, or dosage options, such as transdermal gels or suppositories, when treating hospice patients.

The ultimate goal in preparing any of these customized medications is to help the physician and patient achieve patient compliance.
